Windows XP Error Checking Utility

Disk Error checking utility tool in Windows XP enables you to check the integrity of your hard disk. To check for file system errors and bad sectors on your hard disk use the Disk Error check utility (Chkdsk). Previous windows have ScanDisk Utility. You can run Windows XP Disk Error Checking utility from the command line or use the local disk properties.

Accessing Error Checking Utility (Chkdsk)

Check errors using Local Disk Properties:
1. Double click My Computer icon on your desktop or click Start | My Computer
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to Defragment, and then click Properties.
3. Click on the Tools tab, click Check Now button under the Error-Checking tab.
4. Select both options (Automatically fix file system errors & scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors) in the popup window and click start


Manually check Disk Errors using Chkdsk command

1. click Start and then Run
2. Type cmd in the text box and click ok. This will execute the file cmd.exe
3. Type chkdsk and hit enter
