Default Folders or Interfaces

Default interfaces of the Windows XP includes My Computer, Recycle Bin, My Document, My Pictures, My Music, My Network Places, Internet Explore, Control Panel, Prints & Faxes, etc. In this section , we will briefly discuss the functions of each interface.

My Computer

My computer section contain interfaces to shared resource of your local machine including hard drives, compact disk drives, mapped network drives, and user document folders. My Computer has link to other system interface on the left panel. View in the toolbar has more functions to sort out the icons of My Computer folder.
Right clicking the hard drive, Floppy Drive, CD or the DVD drive will give you more function to explore the selected drive.
Use the address bar to select another folder or to explore a drive.

My Document Folder

My document folder is where you would normally save your files by default. Windows XP sets up My Document folder for each user. A user with administration rights is able to view all the documents saved on the system. Limited user can only have access to their content. Windows XP also creates sub folders My Pictures and My Music under this folder. View in the toolbar has more functions to display content of this folder and sub folders.

My Network Places

My network places folder display list of your network resources such as network drives, printers, folders, etc. An administrator user would be able to see the entire network.

Recycle Bin

Recycle bin temporary holds the deleted content. Content of your recycle are still on your hard drive and require space. You will have to empty your recycle bin once a while. To empty your recycle bin, go to File|Empty Recycle Bin. You can also delete individual file from the recycle bin just like you normally do. To restore a file or folder accidentally deleted, right click and click on restore as it shows on the picture.

Windows XP Toolbars


Three toolbars are Standard bar, Address bar, and Links bar. To show or hide any of the bars, go to View|Toolbars and check the toolbar to show or uncheck to hide.

Add or Remove Standard Buttons

To customize the Standard Buttons on your Standard Bar, go to View|Toolbars|Customize and you will see a window similar to the figure on the left. Right side has current buttons on your Standard bar, left side has all the buttons available in Windows XP. Select the button you want and click Add to insert or Remove to delete.
